Nicosia is described by the Republic of Cyprus's official tourism authority as the only divided capital in the world, combining a walled Old City with a modern commercial centre, and that description matters for anyone picking up a rental car here. "Nicosia" on its own is not a precise enough pick-up instruction: the exact street address, the opening hours of the desk, and the handover type (counter, meet-and-greet or a named meeting point) should all be visible on your confirmation before you travel, since city offices tend to keep tighter hours than the airport desks.

Once you have the car, treat the walled Old City the way most visitors do: as a walk-in destination rather than a driving one. Its narrow streets are largely pedestrian, so the practical approach is to park in one of the marked car parks just outside the Venetian Walls, such as those near the moat or main squares, and walk in from there. Attempting to drive into the old core itself usually means longer searches for a space and a higher chance of ending up in a restricted or private area.

As with the rest of the Republic of Cyprus, traffic drives on the left, and the national tourism transportation guidance sets out speed limits of roughly 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on other roads and 100 km/h on motorways, along with a legal blood alcohol limit of 50 mg per 100 ml. Nicosia's city-centre one-way systems and pedestrianised streets mean a compact car is often easier to place than a large one, particularly if your stay is short and city-focused rather than built around a longer road trip.
